The problem
Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group (Uber ATG) was testing fully developmental self-driving cars on public roads. On 18 March 2018, at about 9:58 p.m., a modified 2017 Volvo XC90 running Uber’s automated driving system “struck a female pedestrian walking across the northbound lanes of N. Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona” (source). The vehicle “had been operating about 19 minutes in autonomous mode” with a single human safety operator in the driver’s seat (source). The pedestrian, 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg, was killed in what independent reporting records as “the first fatal collision involving a fully autonomous car” (source).
What was built
The test vehicle was a “modified 2017 Volvo XC90 sport utility vehicle (SUV)” that Uber ATG “had modified… with a proprietary developmental automated driving system (ADS)” (source). This draft does not assert the sensor or model stack as a figure: no in-hand source states it verbatim beyond the ADS itself and the fact that the vehicle’s own emergency braking was not acting under automated control.
The outcome
The failure was not that the automation was blind. NTSB data show “The ADS detected the pedestrian 5.6 seconds before impact” (source). The failure was interpretation and response: “Although the ADS continued to track the pedestrian until the crash, it never accurately classified her as a pedestrian or predicted her path” (source). But it did not let the builder off: it found “Contributing to the crash were the Uber Advanced Technologies Group’s (1) inadequate safety risk assessment procedures, (2) ineffective oversight of vehicle operators, and (3) lack of adequate mechanisms for addressing operators’ automation complacency” (source).
