Moderna's company-wide ChatGPT Enterprise rollout: 750 custom GPTs, from a vendor case study

Moderna deployed OpenAI's ChatGPT Enterprise company-wide in April 2024 and reported 750 custom GPTs within two months, 120 conversations per user per week, and 100% adoption in its legal team. The engagement metrics come from OpenAI's own provider-produced case study and are corroborated only in outline by independent press. They are unaudited, and the clinical 'Dose ID' tool is a pilot, not a validated result.

MetricBeforeAfter
Custom GPTs built (within about two months) 0 before ChatGPT Enterprise 750 across legal, research, manufacturing and commercial
ChatGPT Enterprise conversations per user per week (average) 120 (single-sourced to the OpenAI case study)
Legal-team adoption 100% (company-stated)
Foundation: 2023 internal 'mChat' adoption more than 80% of employees

The problem

Moderna wanted generative AI in the hands of every employee across very different functions, legal, research, manufacturing, commercial, rather than in one pilot team. The question was whether a company-wide rollout would actually be used, and used for real work.

What was built

Moderna deployed OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise company-wide, announced on 24 April 2024, building on its 2023 internal instance ‘mChat’. Employees built custom GPTs across functions, including a clinical ‘Dose ID’ pilot. Per Moderna’s own blog, the collaboration aimed to “ensure every employee at Moderna has a purpose-built AI assistant to augment their work” (source).

The outcome

Read the sourcing note before the numbers: the usage metrics below appear in OpenAI’s provider-produced case study, a vendor source, and are relayed in outline by Constellation Research. They are not independently audited.

750 GPTs in two months. OpenAI’s case study states that “within two months of the ChatGPT Enterprise adoption: Moderna had 750 GPTs across the company” (source). Constellation Research relayed that Moderna “deployed more than 750 GPTs across the company and multiple functions including legal, research, manufacturing and commercial” (source).

Usage intensity. The same OpenAI case study reports “40% of weekly active users created GPTs” and “each user has 120 ChatGPT Enterprise conversations per week on average” (source). These two figures appear only in the provider case study and are unaudited.

Legal-team adoption. OpenAI quotes Moderna’s Chief Legal Officer Shannon Klinger and states the “legal team boasts 100% adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise” (source). How adoption is defined and measured is not specified.

The foundation. The rollout built on mChat, Moderna’s 2023 internal chatbot on OpenAI’s API, “adopted by more than 80% of employees” (source), a figure Constellation also relayed (source).

The clinical pilot, stated as a pilot. Moderna built “a GPT pilot called Dose ID” that “has the potential to review and analyze clinical data”, with “a detailed review, led by humans and with AI input” (source). This is a pilot in development and validation, not a delivered clinical outcome, and is presented here as such.

How this was verified

This case carries a green badge under TIN’s current standard: independently validated by TIN against the public record, every figure quoted exactly and checked against a primary or independent capture. Read the badge as TIN validated this account is accurate, including the honest part the account states plainly: the headline engagement numbers originate in OpenAI’s provider-produced case study, a self-reported vendor source, corroborated only in outline by independent trade press and Moderna’s own blog. Green certifies the figures are reported exactly with their provider origin on the page, and the Dose ID pilot is not framed as a result; it does not certify the metrics were independently audited. Direct client confirmation is the higher bar TIN grows into as the platform matures.
