# Will AI replace marketers? What the hiring and campaign record shows (2026)

By Maneesh Behera, Head of AI Deployment. Published 2026-10-29. The Internet Ninja, analysis.

> The record on marketing jobs splits along one line. The official US outlook has marketing managers growing and advertising and promotions managers shrinking, and the measured cases show AI taking the production work while people keep the judgment calls.

## Case files this argument rests on

- [Zalando's 2018 'algorithms replace 250 marketing jobs': the headline, and the hiring plan it left out](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/zalando-ai-marketing-roles-2018/)
- [Mango's first fully AI-generated campaign: Sunset Dream, 95 markets, and no public performance number](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/mango-ai-generated-fashion-campaign/)
- [An MIT randomized trial in Science: ChatGPT cut professional writing time 40% and raised graded quality 18%](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/noy-zhang-mit-chatgpt-writing-rct-40pct-faster-18pct-quality-science-2023/)
- [AI chatbots and earnings: Denmark study of 25,000 workers finds about 3% time savings and no earnings effect](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/denmark-llm-chatbots-adopted-across-11-exposed-occupations-measured-time-savings/)

If you work in marketing, you have read the forecast. The model writes the copy, the generator makes the shoot, the algorithm buys the media, and the team becomes a prompt.

There is a record to test that against. It does not say marketing survives untouched. It says the cut runs through the work, not through the department.

Start with the official US outlook. It projects marketing manager employment to grow <span class="kpi">7 percent</span> from 2025 to 2035, while advertising and promotions managers fall <span class="kpi">4 percent</span> over the same decade ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/advertising-promotions-and-marketing-managers.htm)).

## What "will AI replace marketers" actually asks

Will AI replace marketers asks whether software can take over the decisions a marketing team is paid for, not just the assets it produces.

Those are two different questions. AI clearly produces assets. The harder question is who decides what to say, to whom, and whether it worked.

This post uses four TIN case files: one company that cut marketing roles to algorithms, one campaign generated by AI, one randomized trial on writing work, and one register study of pay and hours.

## Will AI replace marketing jobs?

Not as a whole, on the record so far. The official projection grows the larger marketing occupation and shrinks the smaller advertising one, and it names AI as part of the reason for the split.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts <span class="kpi">421,600</span> marketing managers in 2025, projected to reach <span class="kpi">450,800</span> by 2035 ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/advertising-promotions-and-marketing-managers.htm)). Advertising and promotions managers go the other way, from <span class="kpi">33,200</span> to <span class="kpi">31,900</span> ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/advertising-promotions-and-marketing-managers.htm)).

The agency's reason is specific. Managers and staff "are both expected to use improving technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to more quickly generate, test, and modify digital advertisements" ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/management/advertising-promotions-and-marketing-managers.htm)).

The analysts who measure markets are projected to grow <span class="kpi">7 percent</span> as well, with about <span class="kpi">82,000</span> openings a year ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/market-research-analysts.htm)). These are forecasts, not measurements, and they are cited here as projections TIN did not check.

## What happened when a retailer replaced marketers with algorithms?

When Zalando replaced marketing roles with algorithms in 2018, it hired for the data work in the same breath. The headline kept the first half and dropped the second.

Co-CEO Rubin Ritter said the company planned "to replace <span class="kpi">200 to 250</span> positions previously carried out by people with algorithms and artificial intelligence" ([source](https://www.thelocal.de/20180309/zalando-to-replace-up-to-250-jobs-with-algorithms)).

His next sentence: "Marketing will become increasingly data-based in the future. Therefore we need a higher number of developers and data analysts" ([source](https://www.thelocal.de/20180309/zalando-to-replace-up-to-250-jobs-with-algorithms)). The same report carried a plan to hire an additional <span class="kpi">2,000</span> people ([source](https://www.thelocal.de/20180309/zalando-to-replace-up-to-250-jobs-with-algorithms)).

That is the shape the BLS projection describes eight years later. The roles that executed the plan went. The roles that read the data were added.

## Can AI make a whole campaign without marketers?

A brand has shipped a campaign it calls generated entirely by AI, and people still ran it. Mango's Sunset Dream campaign for its teen line went live in <span class="kpi">95 markets</span> in July 2024 ([source](https://www.worldfootwear.com/news/mango-launches-first-campaign-entirely-generated-by-ai/9959.html)).

The pipeline started with "real photos" of the garments, fed a model trained to position them, and ended with images "retouched, edited, and mastered" by the internal photography studio ([source](https://petapixel.com/2024/07/16/fashion-brand-mango-launches-photorealistic-ai-generated-campaign/)).

Read the gap honestly. No performance figure for the campaign is public. Nobody can say from the record whether the AI shoot sold more, cost less or saved time. What the record shows is the division of labor: the model made the frames, people chose which ones shipped.

## Will AI replace digital marketers who write?

Not on the best controlled evidence. It made them faster and better, and it changed what the job consists of.

In the MIT trial published in Science, researchers gave <span class="kpi">453</span> college-educated professionals, marketers among them, occupation-specific writing tasks and randomly gave half ChatGPT ([source](https://news.mit.edu/2023/study-finds-chatgpt-boosts-worker-productivity-writing-0714)).

Time to finish fell by <span class="kpi">40 percent</span>, and quality graded by independent evaluators rose by <span class="kpi">18 percent</span> ([source](https://news.mit.edu/2023/study-finds-chatgpt-boosts-worker-productivity-writing-0714)). The working paper adds the part that matters for the job: the tool "restructures tasks towards idea-generation and editing and away from rough-drafting" ([source](https://economics.mit.edu/sites/default/files/inline-files/Noy_Zhang_1.pdf)).

The limits are real. MIT describes "20- to 30-minute tasks" in a controlled online setting in early 2023, not a year of campaign work ([source](https://news.mit.edu/2023/study-finds-chatgpt-boosts-worker-productivity-writing-0714)).

## Has AI changed marketers' pay or hours yet?

No, on the one register study that names marketing professionals. NBER Working Paper 33777 surveyed workers in 11 exposed occupations, "marketing professionals" among them ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)).

The latest round covers <span class="kpi">25,000</span> workers across <span class="kpi">7,000</span> workplaces, linked to Danish records of earnings and hours ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)). The authors find "precise null effects on earnings and recorded hours," ruling out effects larger than <span class="kpi">2%</span> two years after ChatGPT ([source](https://www.nber.org/papers/w33777)).

It is a working paper, not peer-reviewed, and it covers the first two years. It tells you what has happened, not what will.

## The proof

TIN's case file on Zalando puts both halves of the 2018 statement side by side: [the marketing roles cut and the hiring plan the retelling dropped](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/zalando-ai-marketing-roles-2018/).

TIN's case file on Mango documents the human-in-the-loop pipeline and states that no result is public: [the Sunset Dream campaign in 95 markets](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/mango-ai-generated-fashion-campaign/).

TIN's case file on the MIT trial quotes the published figures and the working paper, and names the source-access gap: [ChatGPT and professional writing work](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/noy-zhang-mit-chatgpt-writing-rct-40pct-faster-18pct-quality-science-2023/).

TIN's case file on the Danish study quotes both versions of the paper and prints where they differ: [chatbots, pay and hours across 11 occupations](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/denmark-llm-chatbots-adopted-across-11-exposed-occupations-measured-time-savings/).

The wider Zalando argument is in [the ai job-losses myth](https://theinternetninja.com/blog/ai-job-losses-myth-what-the-zalando-record-actually-shows-2026/). None of these files counts marketing jobs lost to AI, and this post claims no such number.

## What each record shows

| Record | What it tested | Result | What it means for marketers |
|---|---|---|---|
| BLS outlook 2025 to 2035 | Projected US jobs | Marketing managers up 7%, ad managers down 4% | Production roles shrink, strategy grows |
| Zalando, 2018 | Roles moved to algorithms | 200 to 250 cut, 2,000 hires planned | Execution went, data roles came |
| Mango, 2024 | AI-generated campaign | Live in 95 markets, no result public | People still pick what ships |
| MIT trial, Science | Writing tasks with ChatGPT | 40% faster, 18% better graded | Drafting shrinks, editing grows |
| Denmark, NBER 33777 | Pay and hours, marketers included | Null, effects over 2% ruled out | No measured displacement yet |

## The bottom line

The forecast that AI replaces marketers treats marketing as asset production: copy, images, variants. The record treats it as two jobs bundled together, making the asset and deciding which one to bet on. Every case here strips the first job down and leaves the second standing, and the official outlook prices that split in. If your week is mostly drafting and resizing, that work is going. If it is mostly choosing, measuring and answering for the result, it is growing. Sort any role by which of the two it pays for.

## Questions

**Will AI replace marketers?**

AI has not replaced marketers on the measured record so far. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects marketing manager employment to grow 7 percent from 2025 to 2035, and a Danish register study covering marketing professionals found no effect on earnings or recorded hours two years after ChatGPT.

**Will AI replace marketing jobs in advertising?**

AI is expected to shrink some advertising jobs, according to the official US projection. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects advertising and promotions managers to decline 4 percent from 2025 to 2035 and names AI that can quickly generate, test and modify digital ads as one reason.

**Will AI replace digital marketers who write content?**

AI will not replace digital marketers who write content on the evidence of the best-known trial. In the MIT study published in Science, marketers were among 453 professionals whose writing tasks got 40 percent faster with ChatGPT, and the tool restructured the work toward ideas and editing rather than removing the writer.
