# Will AI replace accountants? What the measured record shows (2026)

By Maneesh Behera, Head of AI Deployment. Published 2026-10-25. The Internet Ninja, analysis.

> The one study that measured accountants after ChatGPT, a Danish register study of 25,000 workers in 11 occupations, found no effect on earnings or recorded hours and self-reported time savings of about 3%. The record of automated accounting going wrong says the job that survives is the one that can say the ledger is wrong.

## Case files this argument rests on

If you work in accounting, you have read the forecast. The model does the reconciliations, drafts the close, reads the invoices, and the junior seat goes first.

There is a record to test that against. It is short, and it does not say what the forecast says.

Start with the one measurement that names accountants. A Danish study linked chatbot surveys to administrative registers and found "precise null effects on earnings and recorded hours," ruling out effects larger than <span class="kpi">2%</span> two years after ChatGPT ([source](https://www.nber.org/papers/w33777)).

## What "will AI replace accountants" actually asks

Will AI replace accountants asks whether software can take over the work an accountant is paid and held responsible for, not just speed up parts of it.

Those are two different questions. One is about tasks, and AI clearly does some. The other is about who answers when the number is wrong.

This post uses four TIN case files: two measurements of AI at work, one record of an accounting system trusted over people, and one auditor testing an AI savings claim.

## Will AI replace accountants?

No, not on the measured record so far. The only large study that measured accountants after ChatGPT found no movement in their pay or hours, and the official US projection still has the occupation growing.

The study is NBER Working Paper 33777 by Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard. Its surveys cover 11 exposed occupations, starting with "accountants, customer support specialists, financial advisors" ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)).

The latest round "includes responses from <span class="kpi">25,000</span> workers across <span class="kpi">7,000</span> workplaces," linked to Statistics Denmark records of earnings and hours ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)). The paper's first version concluded that chatbots "have had no significant impact on earnings or recorded hours in any occupation" ([source](https://fortune.com/2025/05/18/ai-chatbots-study-impact-earnings-hours-worked-any-occupation/)).

Read the limits. It is a working paper, not peer-reviewed, and it measures the first two years of adoption. It is evidence about what has happened, not a forecast of what will.

## Does AI save accountants time?

Yes, a little, and the saved time has not turned into output. That is the finding of two separate studies on two continents, and it is the most useful thing a finance leader can know before budgeting a rollout.

In Denmark, "adopters in our sample report savings of about <span class="kpi">3%</span> of their work hours" ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)). Most did not bank it: <span class="kpi">85%</span> "report reallocating time savings from AI chatbots to other job tasks" ([source](https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w33777/w33777.pdf)).

In Korea, the central bank found "AI adoption reduces average work time by <span class="kpi">3.8 percent</span>, equivalent to approximately 1.5 hours per week" ([source](https://www.bok.or.kr/eng/bbs/B0000354/view.do?nttId=10098400&menuNo=400409&relate=Y&depth=400409&programType=newsDataEng)). Then the decisive line: "the relationship between time savings and actual output growth is essentially zero" ([source](https://www.bok.or.kr/eng/bbs/B0000354/view.do?nttId=10098400&menuNo=400409&relate=Y&depth=400409&programType=newsDataEng)).

The Korean study is economy-wide, not an accountants' study. It does not show that accountants saved nothing. It shows that hours saved and work replaced are different numbers, which is exactly the distinction a replacement forecast skips.

## What does the job outlook for accountants say?

The official US outlook says the occupation is growing, not shrinking. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts <span class="kpi">1,595,200</span> accountant and auditor jobs in 2025 ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/accountants-and-auditors.htm)).

It projects employment to "grow <span class="kpi">5 percent</span> from 2025 to 2035, faster than the average for all occupations," with "about <span class="kpi">115,300</span> openings" a year ([source](https://www.bls.gov/ooh/business-and-financial/accountants-and-auditors.htm)).

That is a projection, and projections can be wrong. It is cited here as the government's forecast, not as evidence TIN checked.

## What happens when the accounting system is trusted over the accountant?

When an institution treats its system's figure as the truth, the error stops being an accounting problem and becomes a human one. The clearest record of that is not an AI system at all, and that is the point.

The UK Post Office ran Horizon, a branch-accounting system operated by Fujitsu, and treated its shortfalls as proof of theft. It used its prosecution powers against "more than <span class="kpi">700</span> sub-postmasters" ([source](https://ccrc.gov.uk/post-office-horizon-cases/)).

In 2021 the Court of Appeal quashed <span class="kpi">39</span> convictions. Defendants had been convicted "on the basis that the Horizon data must be correct, and cash must therefore be missing, when in fact there could be no confidence as to that foundation" ([source](https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Hamilton-Others-v-Post-Office-summary-230421.pdf)).

Horizon was rule-based software, not a language model. It belongs here because it shows what the accountant's job is once the arithmetic is automated: being the person able to say the system's number is wrong, and being believed.

## Will AI replace auditors?

No, and the record suggests AI creates audit work rather than removing it. An auditor tests a claimed figure, and AI is now the source of some of the largest unproven figures in public finance.

In July 2026 the UK National Audit Office reported that "Government expects substantial efficiencies from digital transformation and AI, amounting to £45 billion each year" ([source](https://www.nao.org.uk/press-releases/effective-government-workforce-planning-is-key-to-delivering-productive-resilient-and-affordable-public-services/)).

Then it did the auditor's job. It found "the published efficiency plans do not provide details of how departments derived their expected workforce efficiencies" ([source](https://www.nao.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/government-workforce-planning-lessons-learned.pdf)). The claim came from the AI case; the check came from people.

## The proof

TIN's case file on the Danish study quotes both versions of the paper and prints where they differ: [25,000 workers, about 3% time savings, no earnings effect](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/denmark-llm-chatbots-adopted-across-11-exposed-occupations-measured-time-savings/).

TIN's case file on the Bank of Korea note reads the primary page and two independent outlets, and prints the one place an outlet disagrees with the primary: [work time down 3.8%, productivity gain near zero](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/bank-of-korea-2026-ai-adoption-cuts-work-time-3-8pct-productivity-gain-near-zero/).

TIN's case file on Horizon rests on the court's own summary and primary legislation: [39 convictions quashed and an Act of Parliament for the rest](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/uk-post-office-horizon-it-scandal-court-of-appeal-quashes-39-convictions-2021/).

TIN's case file on the NAO report reads the auditor's full text: [£45bn a year of AI and digital savings not yet evidenced](https://theinternetninja.com/stories/uk-nao-government-workforce-planning-45bn-ai-digital-savings-claim-2026/).

Read the limits honestly. One study measured accountants by name, and none of these files counts accountants displaced by AI. This post claims no such number.

## What each record shows

| Record | What it measured | Result | What it means for accountants |
|---|---|---|---|
| Denmark, NBER 33777 | Pay and hours, 11 occupations | Null, effects over 2% ruled out | No measured displacement yet |
| Bank of Korea, 2026 | Work time and output | 3.8% less time, output link near zero | Saved hours are not saved jobs |
| Post Office Horizon | Convictions on system data | 39 quashed in 2021 | Someone must be able to dispute the ledger |
| UK NAO, 2026 | A £45bn AI savings claim | Derivation not shown | AI claims create audit work |

## The bottom line

The forecast that AI replaces accountants treats the job as producing numbers. The record treats it as standing behind them. Two studies found time saved and nothing replaced, and the worst accounting failure on file came from trusting the system over the people who doubted it. Automate the arithmetic, keep the person who can say it is wrong: that holds for any function whose output someone else relies on.

## Questions

**Will AI replace accountants?**

AI has not replaced accountants on the measured record so far. The largest register study, NBER Working Paper 33777, surveyed about 25,000 Danish workers in 11 AI-exposed occupations including accountants and found precise null effects on earnings and recorded hours two years after ChatGPT. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects accountant and auditor employment to grow 5 percent from 2025 to 2035.

**Will AI replace auditors?**

AI will not replace auditors on the evidence in this post, because the auditor's job is to test a claimed figure, and AI is now producing claimed figures that need testing. In July 2026 the UK National Audit Office found that the published plans behind a £45 billion a year AI and digital efficiency expectation did not show how departments derived it.

**Will AI replace accountants and auditors in 10 years?**

AI replacing accountants and auditors within 10 years is not what the official projection says. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 115,300 openings a year for accountants and auditors over the 2025 to 2035 decade. A projection is a forecast, not a measurement, and this post claims no number of its own.

This post is analysis, not proof. The evidence lives in the case files: https://theinternetninja.com/stories/
